Monty had enough and made something better

After years of frustrations with the poor quality of adventure clothing and equipment available, Andrew Montgomery 'Monty' had enough and made something better, something he could rely on.

In 1978, using a borrowed sewing machine, he made himself a sleeping bag, down jacket and tent. Friends were impressed by his creations, and commissioned pieces.

1981

A reputation for quality gear quickly spread

A reputation for quality gear quickly spread and in 1981 Mont Adventure Equipment was founded.

1982

A Life Changing Trip On The Franklin River

In 1981, Mont’s founder, Monty spent 10 days rafting Tasmania’s Franklin River during one of Australia’s most significant environmental campaigns. The fight to save the Franklin, a symbol of wild beauty, has shaped Mont’s core values of sustainability and environmental responsibility. This experience instilled a deep respect for nature and a commitment to creating durable, ethical outdoor gear.

Today, Mont continues to make intentional and sustainable choices for our people, the planet, and our products, ensuring that wild places like the Franklin endure, allowing future generations to explore and appreciate nature responsibly.

1988

Chosen for Australia's Bicentennial Everest Climb

Mont's starts to support and provide gear for expeditions to the most remote places in the world.

1993

Technical Apparel range is launched

A focus on research and development using industry leading fabric technology that are still used today.

Our iconic Tempest Shellwear Jacket and the Icicle Down Jacket where launched.

1999

Mont goes global

By the end of the 90's Mont grew into international markets including Japan and Europe.

2006

Awarded Australian Design Mark

Mont was awarded multiple Australian Design Marks and shortlisted in the Australian Good Design Awards in 2006.

Our gear continues to set new design standards. We have a longlasting reputation for innovative design and dependability achieved through our ongoing commitment to function, quality and performance.

2017

A year for history making expeditions

Since 1981 our gear has been essential in expeditions to the most extreme locations on Earth, including countless ascents of 8000m peaks, history making traverses to both poles, ski expeditions across Greenland and more.

2017 was a particularly huge year for the history books.

2020

Restoring and regrowing forests

Taking responsibility for our impact on the environment by redefining our approach to how we do business in 2020 we began our partnership with Eden Reforestion Project to restore forests in Uyuca Biological Reserve, Honduras, Central America.

We are committed to making intentional choices for the longevity of people, our products and the planet. Mont is working towards achieving carbon neutral status under the Climate Active certification, back by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
