The Mont Temperature Rating System is based on over 40 years of experience in the design, manufacture and use of sleeping bags in the wild. Any adventure, any weather, there is a Mont sleeping bag designed for, used in, and proven in that situation.
If you are a cold sleeper you usually know it. They feel the cold and wear layers on an average temperature night.
The cold sleepers rating suggests that an average cold sleeper will be comfortable at or around that temperature.
If you are a warm sleeper you usually find yourself waking up hot in the middle of the night.
The warm sleeper rating suggests that an average warm sleeper will be comfortable at or around that temperature.
If you don't find you are a cold or warm sleeper always choose the colder sleeping temperature rating.
The Mont Temperature Rating System does not specify an Extreme Temperature. The Extreme rating found on some sleeping bags is a survival rating only and cannot be relied on for general use: you will be cold, you will be uncomfortable, you will probably not sleep, and there is a risk of injury. If there is a chance that you will see temperatures at or near the Extreme rating of your sleeping bag, that sleeping bag is not warm enough for that situation.
The stated range is an indication of the potential comfort range and minimum temperature that may be possible. This should be used only as a guide. Ratings can vary dramatically depending on whether you are a warm or cold sleeper.
Other factors that will determine your comfort in a sleeping bag are the type of sleeping mat used, whether you're wearing thermals, socks or headwear, your health, metabolism, age and fatigue, hydration levels and what you've eaten. Hydronaute XT shell will increase the warmth of a sleeping bag.
These temperature ratings assume you're using an appropriately insulated sleeping mat, you are well hydrated, well fed and dry.
We always suggest buying a sleeping bag with a temperature rating that will cover you a few degrees below the temperature you expect to face. It is much easier to cool down than it is to warm up.
