Sleeping Bag Care Guide
A sleeping bag is one of the most important pieces of gear that an adventurer can have. When the temperatures dip low, it keeps you comfortable even when sleeping out under the stars. So, when caring for a sleeping bag, there are a few things to keep in mind to maximize its life. We have compiled the most common questions, along with some useful tips so you can make sure you and your bag stay together for the long haul.
HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY BAG DURING AND BETWEEN TRIPS?
Between trips always store your bag in its storage sack to help maintain the loft and warmth of your bag. We also recommend using a Mont Inner Sheet with your bag; this will help keep it clean and maintain the loft and warmth of your bag.
Using a camping mat under your bag will help keep the bag clean and will provide thermal insulation from the ground. Always air your bag after each use and store completely dry.
HOW DO I WASH MY SLEEPING BAG?
We recommend hand washing your bag in a large tub with down-cleaner. Do not dry-clean. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Do not use a top loading washing machine.
Follow these simple steps below to hand wash your bag:
- Turn your bag inside out or unzip completely.
- Fill the tub with lukewarm water enough to cover the bag, add down-cleaner as per the manufacturers instructions.
- Gently knead the bag to work water and cleaner throughout taking care not to lift the bag out of the water.
- Empty the tub and compress the bag to get rid of as much soiled water as possible.
- Refill the tub with clean water and knead the bag to rinse out the soiled water; this step may need to be repeated.
- Empty tub and compress bag until thoroughly drained.
- Roll bag into a ball and lift with two hands. Lifting a wet bag loosely can cause the fabric to tear.
HOW DO I DRY MY SLEEPING BAG?
We recommend tumble drying on a delicate and low heat setting. Check the bag frequently to make sure it is not overheating, intermittently massaging the bag to break up any down clumps. You can also add a few clean tennis balls in the dryer to help prevent the down clumping. Once finished, carefully feel the down to ensure it is completely dry before storing. We recommend laying the bag out for several days after drying before storing.
