Shellwear Care Guide
We are passionate about making gear to protect you on all of life’s adventures. We know you are keen to ensure your Mont shellwear, new or existing, remains in peak condition. Here’s the regular maintenance you should be doing whether you're hitting the back country every weekend or enjoying more laid-back adventures!
Routine washing
After every major adventure or once a season, wash your shellwear. This is the most crucial step to ensuring the longevity of your gear. Washing maintains your membrane layer, keeping it clean and preventing the accumulation of dirt, oils, and environmental contaminants. A clean membrane reduces bacterial growth and minimizes the risk of delamination over time.
- Clean your washing machine by running a rinse cycle. Ensure no excess detergent remains the machine or drawer.
- Make sure the pockets of your garment are empty.
- Close all zips, pockets, and fastenings.
- Choose a specific tech wash. We love Nikwax Tech Wash.
- Run a gentle, cool wash cycle with a slow spin.
- Line dry or use a coat hanger to drip dry in the shade.
- When dry, iron the outside of the garment, using a cool iron with no steam. Ensure that you have a pillowcase or tea towel between your item and the plate of the iron. Do not iron over zippers, trim, or fastenings. This step rejuvenates the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating.
DWR reapplication
Over time you will start to notice a reduction in beading on your shellwear. When this starts to happen, you know it’s time to reapply the DWR, you will need to continue to do this on a regular basis every six to twelve months depending on your use.
- If your item has recently been washed, but water is not beading on the outer surface you can iron the outside of the garment this may re-activate the factory applied DWR coating if not continue…
- Wash as above
- When still damp, spray liberally the outside of the garment with your chosen DWR spray. We love Nikwax TX Direct spray on.
- Let dry in in the shade until completely dry.
- When dry, iron the outside of the garment, using a cool iron with no steam. Ensure that you have a pillowcase or tea towel between your item and the plate of the iron. Do not iron over zippers, trim, or fastenings. This step sets the DWR coating.
Proper storage
Hang your shell wear in a clean, dust-free, temperature-controlled space with minimal exposure to humidity. Avoid storing it while damp or dirty.
Things to avoid
Tumble drying, opt for ironing as this will give you a more targeted and controlled reinvigoration of your DWR. Tumble drying risks excess heat, abrasion, and damage to smaller components on your shellwear.
Don’t use Bleach, regular washing detergent or fabric softener as these can harm the membrane layer of your jacket and cause accelerated breakdown and a loss of breathability.
Avoid in wash DWR solutions, these are less effective and deposit product all over the jacket which can reduce the breathability of your garment.
Storing your shell wear still damp or dirty after use.
